DAMA International Europe Conference 2007
29 October – 1 November 2007, Victoria Park Plaza Hotel, London

ETL’s first ever attendance and exhibiting at the event proved a winner for both attendees and ETL with an exceptional level of interest in Transformation Manager and ETL’s services. Four ETL team members attended and manned the ETL booth as a Gold sponsor. The team benefited from the varied and high quality of the presentations and were also invited to speak at the event. Over 100 of the delegates stopped by the ETL booth sharing their knowledge and interest in data integration and the latest demands and needs of the market. ETL also conducted demonstrations of TM often completely driven by the interested delegate which was probably unique at the event.

The event confirmed that many organizations, even ones of considerable size, still felt it necessary to hand-code solutions for integrating and managing their data and largely down to the lack of what they believed to be a suitably flexible toolset. However, all the people we talked to expressed their concerns for using such methods for several reasons, among which are:

  • Volumes of data continue to increase and so does the complexity of the business or transformation logic needed which significantly increases the risk, cost and timescales for delivering solutions
  • Hand coding is often resorted to because of lack of flexibility/extensibility in the chosen data integration/ETL tool to meet their more challenging transformations and not out of choice
  • Users of tools in this space sometimes choose in-house development due to vendors not offering greater transparency/openness from the vendors.
  • One of the greatest challenges is not securing the budget to in-house development but the dependency on having individuals possessing expertise and the experience in implementing the solution.

So, many visitors to the booth believed their companies needed to find a product that could reduce or eradicate the need for hand-coded data integration and have followed up their interest in how TM can assist in achieving this. It would be safe to say then that the landscape in the data integration market will change in the next years, with demand for tools offering complete solutions, but at the same time still offering the flexibility to fit with other tool choices.

The Gwynedd Business week, as it is called, came to a climax with the Gwynedd Business Award Gala Dinner, held in the Celtic Royal Hotel in Caernarfon on the 24th of May.

The participation was impressive, since the business awards attracted a large number of entries and, as was stated by the judges, the calibre of entries reflected the quality that exists in Gwynedd and augured well for the local economy.” There were 12 categories and the criteria “exceptional achievement and growth potential, as well as evidence of businesses' contribution to Gwynedd's economy, community and environmental sustainability

ETL participated in the competition, and was short listed for the Science and Technology Award. Three of its members attended the awards ceremony in Caernarfon.
