Data Migration Case Study - Global Manufacturer

The move to a new global manufacturing system required data to be migrated from a range of systems, including a 30 year old in-house developed mainframe application.

Problem

data migrationThis organisation has many manufacturing plants case studies smalland locations around the world. Following a merger, they had many legacy systems, including custom developed mainframe applications, some of which are more than 30 years old, and a collection of SAP and other systems that had been in use for more than 10 years.

The systems were used in different plants and data incompatibility was a constant and major problem that led to operational inefficiencies.

Their challenge was how to validate, merge and migrate the data from these incompatible systems into a single database structure that could be imported into a new centralised data warehouse application. Although a Data Integration tool was being used, it was not able to handle some of the more complex aspects of the mapping.

Solution

core technologyETL was asked to demonstrate our capabilities and following a proof of concept workshop, we were selected for our experience and the capabilities of our Transformation Manager (TM) Data Integration platform. TM’s power and flexibility allows it to handle complexities that some other tools often struggle with such as:

  • Mapping of complex relationships from disparate sources
  • Maintenance of current relational data during migration
  • Addition of further relationships to handle the cross system business links
  • Merging of additional data from other systems and sources to provide further business value to the target system

Results

Using TM we were able to map and then link the disparate and highly complex relational data before migrating it to the new data structure. This provided two key benefits.

  • Standardisation of data across all plants for future use
  • Reduced burden on maintaining data integrity and reliability
  • Improved manufacturing efficiencies due to a single instance of key data
  • Lower total cost of migration when compared with alternative approaches
