Configuring an ODBC Driver

Section - Appendix A

The instructions below describe the process of configuring the standard ODBC driver for the sample Microsoft Access repository supplied with TM. If you want to use one of the commercially available third party ODBC or JDBC drivers, please refer to the documentation provided with that product.

(Please refer to your Database Administrator if you intend to use a different database such as Oracle or Sybase with TM and you need help with configuring the ODBC/JDBC data source.)

The ODBC Data Source must be configured prior to using TM with Microsoft Access or SQL Server.

The connection to the TM repository can be configured for Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL Server through the ODBC Data Source Administrator utility, accessed through the Windows Control Panel.

Step 1

Select the Data Source Administrator utility by double clicking on the Data Sources [ODBC] icon after starting the Control Panel (in some Windows operating systems it is grouped below Administration Options). This starts the utility and displays the ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog window as shown below:

Step 2

Click on the Add… button. The Create New Data Source dialog appears.

Step 3

Select Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb) from the Create New Data Source dialog and click the Finish button.

This selects the driver and opens the ODBC Microsoft Access Setup dialog.

Step 4

Enter the Data Source Name and a brief description.

Note: the Data Source Name is the same name as that used in the URL field when connecting to the repository via TM Design Tool

Step 5a (database already exists)

(Do this step if you are using an existing database; do step 5b if you are creating a new database.)

Click on the Select…button when there is an existing Microsoft Access database (such as the Samples.mdb that is supplied with the installation). Select the repository listed in the Select Database dialog and click on the OK button.

Step 5b (database is being created)

(Do this step if you are creating a new database; do step 5a if you are using an existing database.)

Click on the Create… button when a database does not exist. You will be able to select a name and location for the repository, and choose a format (it is recommended that you accept the default format, Version 4.x). The database file will be automatically created for you when you click on the OK button.

Step 6

Click on the Advanced… button to assign a Login Name and Password to the repository. These values will also be used in the User Name and Password properties when connecting to the repository via the TM Design Tool. Click on the OKbutton.

Step 7

The ODBC Data Source Administrator should now show the new data source.

Click on the OK button to close the window. The data source has now been configured and is ready to use.
